They're not bad games, but 7/10 seems fair.FREE HAND reads your theatre script and talks to you about it, for free. But then, you're competing with Mario & Luigi, Pokémon, Mega Man Battle Network and the Final Fantasy games among many others, so competition was fierce on the console. I've still got my carts and I'll probably play them both when they get to NSO at some point, but they've held up worse than their contemporaries on the system. I think I prefer the first game to the second. Second game opened up the the point where it felt aimless beyond "lighthouse" and working out what to do basically felt like guesswork (lest we forget that the solution for getting into Lemuria is told via song by some random children in a village that has no plot relevancy at all, and that's after the quest to get the trident in the first place). Managed to say more than it needed to (and this is someone who felt those criticisms against FFXVI were unwarranted), give villains with motives that really needed more fleshing out and overall a lot of nothing happens. It's story though, less good, even for the time. Enough to get the brain flowing and mix up the gameplay, but not overly difficult. Graphics and music are still great, gameplay is fine, although for the most part it was often a detriment to not just stick with same element Djinn but it's kinda mediocre without that. I absolutely loved it when it came out and have a lot of nostalgia for it. But they're very good games that yearn for a real sequel. They're obviously very wordy, the characters aren't particularly deep, and the story's just entertaining enough to facilitate the great gameplay. Playing as one the first game's ostensible antagonists in the sequel, and being pursued by the original party, was just such a cool idea.Īre they perfect? Lost Age's exploration was really excellent.Some were permanently missable, so it wasn't flawless implementation, but more games could stand to learn from it even still. Djinn were an incredibly rewarding incentive to explore the world and solve its side quests and puzzles.Intricate job system that unfortunately didn't need to be engaged with as much as it could've.OT's Path Actions, while excellent at making towns and NPCs interactible, could easily be expanded to making the entire world more engaging. Another one of my favorite series - Octopath Traveler - could honestly stand to learn from the Golden Sun series.It made the world and its inhabitants a joy to engage with. The psynergy systen in general was truly unrivaled.The spell effects in this game are insane for the GBA. They have beautiful graphics that aged well and pushed what the system could do. The Golden Sun duology is handily among the very top of the GBA's RPG catalog. Yes, in the proper context of its release. Its a series that I am really looking forward to playing on my analogue pocket (whenever it finally ships) but still looks fantastic on OG hardware/DS.Įdit: I bet you can’t guess what game is in my handheld I have next to me at work… Golden Sun I have at least seen since then. The last time I saw The Lost Age I bought it (along with Golden Sun 1) and that was over 13 years ago now. The Lost Age then has significant improvements and is far more expansive which, to me, causes that title to be one of the best GBA exclusive titles and likely its best exclusive RPG that isn't a Pokemon title.įrom a retro-game hunting perspective, its a title I RARELY see in the wild, with the sequel being even rarer to find in my region. To answer your question, Golden Sun 1 is a solid B game (aka an 8/10 or 4/5 pick your poison). Then having the confidence to actually split their game in two, which also allowed for further improvements in the sequel. And then iteratively improving upon it (largely by speeding it up) and improving the graphics overall (moving from the flat 2D in BtB to a3D pre-modeled sprites in Golden Sun).
